Our hosts were particularly pleased to see us all as they wished
to raise the profile of the golden retriever in Ireland and they
worked very hard to make us all welcome.
Our four A Panel judges for the day were Nigel Carville, Graham
Cox, Dermot Donnelly and Roy Rankin. Joe Johnston, the Field Trial
Secretary was chief steward for the day.
The morning tests were set alongside, in and over a river running
through a valley. The river was fairly fast flowing, causing some
difficulty for the novice dogs who had to actually retrieve the
dummy bobbing away in the current. The open dogs had to cross
the river and adjust their bearings on the other bank after they
had been swept downstream a little. There were three tests in
the morning with many of them sitting the dogs in pairs to test
steadiness on seen and blind retrieves.
Lunch was taken back at the Country Fair, which was being held
at Shanes Castle over that weekend, and then the afternoon tests
were held below the ramparts of the castle.
Excellent viewing for the public - although not such good viewing
for the handlers in the long summer grasses alongside the Lough.
Jumps had been improvised below the castle walls, which made for
good action photos. Again, dogs were working in pairs, each having
to wait for the other to finish their task. Hard luck on the novice
dogs if the open dog got into difficulty!
The organizers decided to throw in a 'treat' at the last minute
with a retrieve into the Lough(which was more like the sea!).
The 'inland' dogs were a little nervous, but all completed
the task satisfactorily and so ended a very interesting and enjoyable
day.
After the results and prizegiving; competitors, helpers and organisers
had a meal in the old converted railway station in the grounds.
The hard work of the host club paid off with Ulster winning
the top prize of top team and top overall dog. Well done to you
all - team and organisers.
